V.I.N.CENT Goes Vinyl
July 1st, 2010

V.I.N.CENT is one of the cuter robots in movies. He’s from Disney’s The Black Hole. And now the folks at MINDstyle are busy creating a permanent keepsake of the little bot for your home. Why they made him blue, we have no idea, but he still looks cool.

Each of these vinyl collectible toys is handpainted and stands 10-inches tall, weighing about 5 pounds. They’ll cost you $129.99 at Sideshow Collectibles.

Transformers LED Clock/Watch From Japan
May 26th, 2010

The fine folks from Japan’s Seahope, known for cool digital watches, have partnered up with Takara Tomy to produce a new timepiece inspired by the Transformers. We can’t tell from this early concept sketch whether the chronolabel LED Transformer will transform from a watch to a stand-up clock, but we want one just the same.

I dub thee Optimus Time.

Fujitsu’s New Robot Teddy Bear
May 13th, 2010

Fujitsu has yet again made an advancement with their toys. This time, they’ve made a Teddy Bear Robot that looks like it will be the next big thing. The robot is able to move around in reaction to what the user does. If you wave at the bear, the camera located in it nose will detect it and then it will respond by waving back. Also, if you don’t play with it for awhile, the bear will fall asleep, but you can wake it up by petting its arm or tickling its foot. Watch out for an angry bear though.

The point of this robot is to give a realistic sense of activity to young children and the elderly. Results have shown that it hasn’t worked as well as other robots with the same goal because it isn’t as spontaneous and realistic, even though the bear has 300 different responses programmed into it. The video below shows how well the human-robot interaction is, but it also shows how it can be repetitive and unrealistic. The bear is on display at the Fujitsu Forum 2010.
